Spring Startup Guide: Engine, Fuel, Electrical

As temperatures continue to rise, it becomes time to start preparing your boat for the season ahead. A thorough spring startup not only helps ensure reliable performance, but it can also prevent avoidable issues once the season is underway.

Below is a practical guide covering three critical systems to check: Engine, Fuel, and Electrical.

Engine Inspection

Your engine is the heart of your boat, making it one of the most important areas to inspect during spring startup.

  • Look for signs of cracking fraying or brittleness on your belts, hoses and clamps.
  • Check the engine oil level and condition
  • Inspect aluminum or zinc anodes & replace as needed
  •

Fuel System Check

Fuel systems are especially susceptible to problems after long periods of storage, making this an essential part of your spring preparation.

  • Inspect fuel lines and connections for cracks, leaks, or stiffness
  • Replace old or degraded fuel that has been sitting in the tank since last season
  • Replace fuel filters & water separators
  •

Electrical Inspection

A properly functioning electrical system is key to both safety and convenience on the water.

  • Test navigation lights, gauges, and onboard electronics
  • Inspect wiring and terminals for corrosion
  • Check for loose or corroded connections and grounding points
  •

Start the Season with Confidence

Taking the time to inspect and replace these core systems can go a long way toward ensuring a smooth and trouble-free start to the boating season.
